What Size Pattern Do I Choose?
Saturday September 8, 2018 – 10am – noon – $30
A short workshop exploring and comparing various pattern brands, including independent patterns. We will discuss which measurements to use and why when deciding on a pattern size. And we will consider the alternatives for adjusting and fitting patterns, including ‘slopers’ and ‘muslins’, before beginning work on the garment.
Level 1 Beginner Sewing
Tuesdays Sept. 18, 25, Oct. 2 – 9:30 – 12:30 – $80
“Let’s start at the very beginning, a very good place to start”. New to sewing, or just need a refresher, this 3-session workshop will teach you the basics – all about your machine, best tools, how to read a pattern, how to choose fabrics and supplies. You will make either an elastic waist skirt, or a pair of lounge/pyjama pants. (This is the first in a series of 6 workshops of varying lengths that will build on skills and techniques. You will learn about skirts with zippers and darts, tops with simple collars and closures, button-down shirts with tailored collar, pants, tailored jackets and formal wear. You are encouraged to take the workshops in order; skills are built from one workshop to the next.)
Level 3 – Unstructured blouse, top, simple dress
Thursdays – Sept. 20, 27, Oct.4 – 9:30 – 12:30 – $80
As an intermediate ‘sewist’ you will make a simple top or dress and learn about facings, simple collars and closures, and, as an option, how to work with sheer fabrics. You will also build in your fitting and alteration skills at this level, and more about pattern adjustments.
Level 6 – Blazer, Tailored Jacket
Saturdays – Sept. 22 – Nov. 3 (no class Thanksgiving weekend) – 9:30 – 12:30 – $180
Beginning with a muslin, you will learn how to fit your pattern for this Armani-style tailored jacket. Once you have the perfect fit, you will go on to construct an amazing jacket using Ready-To-Wear techniques: fusible interfacings, welt pockets with flap, tailored collar and sleeve vents. This is an advanced sewing workshop for those who know how to sew. We will construct one side of the jacket in class and you will be required to sew the other side at home in preparation for the next week.
The following workshop ONLY will be at Strangway Community Centre – 519-332-0656
Beginner Quilting Mondays September 17 – 8 weeks
Learn to quilt – from choosing fabrics, using the best tools, and setting up your machine to sew a variety of quilt blocks to make a lap sized quilt. This is also a great way to learn basic sewing. For this class only, contact Strangway Community Centre at 519-332-0656 for more information and to register for this class.
